An alpha hero is a romance love interest who leads: dominant, protective, used to being obeyed and carrying the weight of a pack, a city or a crew. In shifter and omegaverse romance the word is literal — he is the Alpha. The appeal is power that bends for one person, and the tension is whether he will let her stand beside him rather than behind him.

The alpha hero is one of romance's oldest archetypes, and in werewolf and shifter stories he holds an actual title. He is responsible for everyone, trusted by everyone and answerable to almost no one, so the heroine who argues with him, refuses him or simply is not afraid of him becomes the most interesting thing in his life. Modern alpha heroes earn their place: the strength is there, but so is restraint, and the best of them are most compelling when they choose not to use their power. In an interactive story you decide whether to defy him or stand with him, and the story remembers.
Alpha Hero stories on Almost Kiss include Late Bloom and Unmated. Chapter 1 of every story is free to read online with no sign-up, and a free account opens chapters 2–3 of two stories a month. In each story you make the choices, and the story remembers them.
An alpha hero is a dominant, protective love interest who is used to leading and being obeyed. In werewolf, shifter and omegaverse romance he is literally the Alpha of his pack. The romance usually turns on the one person who will not simply follow him, and on what his power costs him.
An alpha hero is defined by leadership and dominance over a group. A possessive hero is defined by how he feels about one person. Many alphas are possessive and protective, but an alpha can be calm and restrained with the heroine, and a possessive hero need not lead anyone at all.
