Shifter romance features a love interest who can transform into an animal — most often a wolf, but also dragons, bears and big cats. The genre usually comes with pack hierarchies, alphas and the mate bond, which ties a shifter to a destined partner. The animal side tends to stand for instinct, loyalty and protectiveness.

Shifter romance pairs the oldest romantic tension — instinct against choice — with literal instinct. The wolf knows who it wants; the man has to decide what to do about it. Dragons add the hoard, and a creature that has never once been told no. The stories here lean into the bond and the hard choices around it.
Almost Kiss has 2 shifter romance stories, including What Fire Cannot Hoard and Unmated. Chapter 1 of every story is free to read online with no sign-up, and a free account opens chapters 2–3 of two stories a month. Each story plays out as a text conversation with the characters.
An alpha is the leader of a shifter pack, usually its strongest and most dominant member. Alpha heroes tend to be protective, commanding and fiercely loyal. Many shifter romances turn on what leadership costs him, and on what happens when the person he wants won't fall in line.
Yes. Dragon shifters are a well-loved subgenre, prized for their hoarding instinct, possessiveness and sheer power. The hoard gives writers a great romantic device: a creature defined by keeping things learning to value one person above everything he owns.
