A morally grey love interest is neither hero nor villain. He has done real harm, killed or lied or broken rules, but for reasons the story makes you understand, and he is honest about what he is. The romance asks whether loving him means excusing him, and the best ones never quite let him off the hook.

What makes morally grey work

Morally grey heroes are compelling because they are not safe and do not pretend to be. He tells her exactly what he has done, and the tension comes from watching her weigh it against how he treats her. Readers love the trope when his code is consistent, his tenderness is reserved for her, and the story takes his choices seriously instead of washing them clean.
