He is coming out of the line towards me now, a head taller than every boy he passes, and his face is doing absolutely nothing at all.
TEAGUE
“He’s my neighbour’s boy, sir. I’ve known him since we were small. His chest is bad. I’ll make sure he doesn’t die on you before midwinter.”
MARSHAL
“Nobody’s chest is bad here, Teague.”
TEAGUE
“No, sir. Course not. Just a figure of speech.”
He grins. It’s the full thing, and the Marshal sighs through his nose, the sigh of somebody who has been grinned at by this boy every day for a fortnight and has stopped fighting it.
MARSHAL
“Fine. Take him. Get him dry. The rest of you, bed.”
The rows break up. Boys go past me in twos and threes, looking. I keep my chin down and my shoulders up and my mouth shut, the way Wren stands when he’s trying to look like he isn’t ill.
And then Teague is in front of me, and the whole yard is still close enough to hear.
He looks down at me. His eyes are brown, warm brown with gold in it, the gold that comes up when his gift is close to the skin. It’s right up now. I can feel the heat coming off him from a foot away, like standing too near the bread oven.
