From Chapter 1
He has refused every bride offered to him for more than a century.
The dragon speaks to an owl-faced councillor by the dais. That is Othra, who chairs the Court’s hearings and whose seal sits on half the papers that cross my desk. I can’t hear him. But when he points at a paper in front of her, Othra folds it under her hand, an unsigned writ she would rather no one else read.
Then he looks up.
At me.
The sensation is not like being admired. Something deep under my ribs gives a violent, impossible pull, as though my heart has been caught by a hook made of sunlight.
Every candle in the Bride Court extinguishes at once.
People scream. A chandelier rains glittering glass over the dancers, and a ring of gold flashes beneath Torren’s skin, curling from his throat to the hinge of his jaw.
A matching warmth blossoms under my wrist.
He doesn’t move. The most frightening man in the city stands in a falling rain of glass and stares at me with an expression I cannot name.
His fingers open, then close, as if he is fighting the urge to reach for something across a great distance.
SOREN
“Well. That has never happened here before.”
The lights return in a rush of scarlet fire. Torren is suddenly in front of me, a court full of demons left whispering behind his back.
He smells of rain on hot stone.
