From Chapter 1
He takes my wrist and puts me in front of him, between his body and the room, and we walk into the kitchen.
RONAN
“Don’t run. If you run, they chase.”
I don’t run. I want to. Every nerve in me has opinions about it.
The kitchen is empty. Tess, his sister and my best friend, went home an hour ago. Ronan takes me straight past the fryers to the walk-in cold room and hauls the steel door open, and I go in, and he pulls it shut behind us.
Cold hits my face. It does nothing to the rest of me.
The bulb hums. Kegs line one wall and the shelves are stacked with lemons and limes, and Ronan puts his back against the door like he expects someone to try it.
Then he looks at me, and breathes in.
I watch it go through him. His chest lifts. His jaw locks. His hands, hanging at his sides, open and close once.
RONAN
“You’re an omega.”
“I’m a beta. I’ve been a beta for twenty-five years. I do the accounts.”
RONAN
“Badly. You’ve undercharged me for six years.”
It’s so exactly what he’d say on any other night that I nearly laugh. Then he breathes in again, and he isn’t joking anymore.
RONAN
“You bloomed.”
He says it the way he’d say you’re bleeding. Plain. Already working out what to do about it.
